The outbreak of the Second World War led to paper shortages that would be the demise of many periodicals.

In the last issue of Modern Boy, 14^th October 1939, readers were told that Biggles stories would continue with “BIGGLES’ SOUTH SEA ADVENTURE” in

“THE GEM” next Wednesday, October 11^th 1939. This would be issue 1652 dated “week ending 14^th October 1939” and “THE GEM” itself would only last until

30^th December 1939 before it merged with “The Triumph”

The Modern Boy Magazine was first published in February 1928 by the Amalgamated Press

The copyright in the magazine is presumably held by the original company or it’s successors although some 80 years have passed since first publication

and some 70 years have passed since it ceased publication

All pictures are taken from my own collection of “The Modern Boy” Magazine.

A few internal pictures have been used to illustrate the Biggles content and other interesting articles and these are deemed to be fair use.
